Abstract

Continuing one's education is a challenging task for anyone. It is even more so for the isolated practitioner. How can doctors, even those in remote areas, be helped to effectively continue their medical education? This paper attempts to answer this question using a problem-solving approach, using the following outline: 1. Definition, Aims and Objectives of Continuing Medical Education - are they appropriate? 2.The Problems - especially those encountered by the rural doctor. 3. Teaching and Learning Theory - some observations. 4. The Implications for Continuing Medical Education. The approach taken by the Department of Family Medicine at Medunsa is described. Five basic premises are stated and their implications discussed.
