Contrast media in radiology - a practical guide
Keywords:
Contrast media, Hypersensitivity, Radiography, Drug toxicity
Abstract
Intravascular radiographic contrast media are well tolerated by patients and their value in radiological procedures is enormous. New low osmolar contrast agents have been developed in an attempt to decrease the severity and, incidence of side effects. The number of major risk factors and the severity of any predisposing conditions that a patient may suffer from, correlate well with the likelihood of developing radiagraphic contrast induced reactions. The role of the new by osmolar radiographic contrast media in acute renal failure, cardiac failure, dehydration, multiple myeloma, sickle cell anaemia and diabetes melitus is discussed.
