Abstract
The prevalence of Protein-Energy Malnutrition (PEM) and the inpatient morbidity mortality associated with this disease in Venda, are presented. The need for a nutrition intervention is recognised and the health services evaluated with a view to switch an intervention. An intersectorial intervention programme is proposed and two new priority services are discussed, ie, a system of active case finding for at-risk children, and a food supplementation scheme. A cost estimate is attempted.
