The role of the Medical Practitioners in the prevention & treatment of scuba diving related accidents

Abstract
Scuba diving is becoming increasingly popular - more tan 20 000 certified divers in RSA today. Physicians need better information, not only to cope with the accidents but also to prevent them. This article includes a list of physical prerequisites, considerations ans absolute contraindications for scuba diving, pointers on the pre-dive medical and follow-up examinations of the diver. A helpful, practical approach to the management of diving related injuries is also given.
