Abstract
By analising the data obtained from reports handed in by 5th year medical students on the 2 week elective period, we concluded that family practitioners in active practice do indeed act as n vital link in the undergraduate training of medical students. Comments by students on the principle of elective period training were overwhelmingly positive and they regarded it as an essential part of their training. The family practitioners who participated by receiving students, were generally in favor of the concept in its presentation. Compared to generally accepted principles of what was regarded as a good example of a family practice, a percentage of practices investigated would take into consideration certain recommendations to improve their practice management and clinical performance.
