Abstract
Herpes zoster is an early clinical manifestation of HIV-I infection. A study was performed in Soweto to establish the relationship between HIV-1 antibody status and patients who present with herpes zoster ophthalmicus (HZO). This was compared to the prevalence of HIV-I in a selected group of patients at Baragwanath Hospital. The effectiveness of the drug, acyclovir, was assessed in those patients with HZO. These findings are presented and a patient report given to illustrate the effects of early treatment.
