The Role of the Family Practitioner in Developing Primary Health Care Services in a District Health System

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to define an extended role for the family practitioner in promoting health and development in a District Health System. The processes for establishing priorities and developing an integrated community-based primary health care (PHC) service, are outlined. Some preliminary results of the New Hanover Primary Health Care and Development Programme (NHPHCDP) will be presented. The paper concludes with challenges lacing the family practitioner in South Africa.
