Abstract
It is a delight to have this opportunity to share with you some thoughts about our discipline. I note that many of the sessions of this symposium are labelled advances in the management of one or other problem or disease and it seemed to me that perhaps we might be so bold as to call this first address: An Advance in Medicine - Family Medicine. That is, we could consider the development of the discipline of family medicine, itself, to be an advance in the practice of medicine as a whole.
