Abstract

Minimum literature is available on the effects of arachnid envenomation in man due to bites by southern African spiders and with few exceptions, concerns envenomation by the neurotoxin producing Laterodectus indistinctus ("button spider" or "knopie spinnekop") (Fig. 1) This spider has been studied by various researchers both in South Africa and throughout the world and the effects of its envenomation have been documented to the extent that these effects in man are now well recognised and a reliable treatment protocol has been evolved.G
