Abstract
The consultation is a common human experience and it is neither possible nor desirable for clinical encounters to be 'affectively neutral'. Inevitably, personal responses in medicine can have important consequences for all concerned, so at the very least, they should be recognised and handled in ways which minimise their chances of causing harm. Furthermore, our desire to practice the best possible medicine should make us attempt to harness and maximise their positive potential.
