Abstract
Family medicine as an academic discipline in South Africa was born in 1968 when Dr Howard Botha initiated the first post-graduate course in Family Medicine at the University of Pretoria. In 1970 the first graduates obtained the M (Med Dom) degree. From 1971 the degree was renamed to the present M Prax Med. The revival of family medicine as an academic discipline became an international phenomenon, especially in countries like Great Britain, the United States of America, Canada, the Netherlands, Belgium, Australia and South Africa.
