Abstract
In 1992 the Manguzi School Health Services (supervised by author IDC) held their first "Easter Essay Competition". All students in secondary schools in the Manguzi Health Ward of Northern Zululand were invited to participate. The competition was intended to promote health as well as the use of English, which is taught as a second language in these schools. Prizes for winners and their schools were sponsored by a local store.
