Abstract

Asthma, which is the commonest chronic disease in both adults and children tends to be under-diagnosed, poorly assessed and under treated. Up to 10% of children can suffer from asthma and urbanisation is associated with an increased prevalence. Education about asthma and communication with asthma patients has also been poor. In 1995 the SA Pulmonology Society published clinical guidelines for the optimal assessment and management of asthmar. These act as a useful benchmark for auditing asthma care.
