Abstract

This month SouthAfrican Family Practice highlights the effects of poverty on health, in response to a call by the International Poverty and Health Network (IPHN). A very similar editorial will be published simultaneously at the beginning of this new millennium by many of the world leading medical journals. The IPHN was created in December 1997; following a series of conferences organised by the World Health Organisation. The aim of the Network is to "integrate health into poverty eradication policies and strategies, promoting community partnership and intersectoral action,as a means to achieve effective and sustainable results."
