Abstract
About 135 million people live with diabetes. In the next two decades it is expected to go as high as 300 million. About 10% of patients with diabetes mellitus have type 1 diabetes. Type I diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults (before 30 years of age) and was previously known as juvenile diabetes or insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). Subtype 1A is due to autoimmune destruction of β cells of islets of Langerhans in the pancreas and associated with certain HLA types and subtype 1B is idiopathic.
