Maternal Deaths
Abstract
Although pregnancy and childbirth are natural processes, many women suffer poor health and even death as a result of the process of becoming a mother. This is particularly true of the developing world. In South Africa, the notification of maternal deaths is required by law and the National Committee for the Confidential Enquiry into Maternal Deaths regularly reports on the causes of these deaths, and makes recommendations in an attempt to improve the situation. The first report was published in 1997. The latest report covers the period 2005-2007 and makes for sad reading.1
